Choosing A Plumber

Choosing the right person to come work on your home – on your most valuable possession – is not an easy decision or one to be taken lightly. The most important question is "can I trust this person to do the job well and treat me fairly."

We know that we will do the job right, but highly encourage you to do your own research as well. Below is a short list of the recommendations by the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners of research you should do. Here is a direct link to their site that will open in a new tab if you'd like to see exactly what they recommend: http://www.tsbpe.state.tx.us/consumer-information.html.

  1. Obtain the name of the Responsible Master Plumber for the company and his/her license number. Our Responsible Master Plumber is Toby Thomas, and his license number is M-38899.
  2. Check the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners (TSBPE) website (https://licensing.hpc.state.tx.us/datamart/mainMenu.do) to:
    1. Verify the validity of the Master Plumber license number – Click on the link above, then click on "Public License Search" on the left side of the page, then click on "Search by License Number", then type in just the numeric part of the license number (38899 for us) in the "License Number" text box, then click "Search". The list will show other professions that have the same number, but a different prefix than "M." Look for "Master Plumber" under the License Type column for the information specific to the Master Plumber you are researching. The Status column will say "Current" if the Master Plumber license is valid.
    2. Verify that the Master Plumber has a Certificate of Insurance on file – Click on the Master Plumber's name in the first column of the page described in the previous step to ensure that the "Certification of Insurance" is "Yes."
  3. Check with the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners Enforcement Division at (800) 845-6584, extension 65249 to see if the plumber has had any valid complaints filed against his or her license.
  4. Check with your local municipal plumbing inspection department to determine:
    1. If any complaints have been filed that were not filed with TSBPE.
    2. If the company has met the requirements to do business in your city.
    3. If the work to be performed requires a permit and inspection from the city.

  5. Get written estimates with enough detail for the job. The Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners does not regulate prices charged by plumbers. These estimates should be detailed enough so that you understand exactly what work is going to be performed for the estimated amount. We are happy to provide free written estimates for remodels and water heater replacements.
  6. The written estimate and invoice should both have the Responsible Master Plumber's license number and the name, address, and telephone number of the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners. This is a small detail, but you want someone who pays attention to the details working on your home.
  7. Obtain references and actually verify those references for previous customer satisfaction. We are happy to provide our list of references upon request.
